about

Russian musician and producer Valery Lebedev, stage name Sound Quelle, returns to Silk Music with a stunningly profound, masterfully crafted three-track EP. His signature sound of lush harmonics and soundscapes atop pulsing and dynamic basslines is once again on display.

The EP's title cut, "Cobra," has all the features of a club-heavy roller, coupled with Sound Quelle's layered and evocative atmospheric touches, which we have come to expect from the Russian phenom. Sound Quelle once again returns to a low churning Reese bass to build the foundation of this driving tune, the foreboding nature of which perhaps gives the song its serpentine name. The percussions are kept tastefully restricted, offering the more aggressive melodics enough sonic space to work their magic and develop in a natural progression. Whimsical arpeggiated motifs bounce off of minute flute runs, all of which intertwine with cascading vocal phrases to bring this track to its thrilling peak. The extended breakdown section allows the narrative to fully unfurl, ultimately making way for a driving, climactic conclusion.

The exhilarating "Peruan" packs a club-ready groove with spirited melodic and vocal components that will keep you guessing at every turn. It is difficult to deny that the movement and attack throughout the bassline and percussions make this tune an especially heavy-hitting dancefloor weapon. Upon this foundation, lush arpeggios, pad sequences, and intoxicating vocal lines methodically develop and crescendo, as the tune progresses. Extended horn-backed bass motifs emerge near the halfway point to truly drive these exquisite conjurations home.

Closing out the EP, "I Can Take Your Pain Away" (co-produced by Silk Music newcomer Deeplowdog) arrives to our ears as a soothing and poignant vocal track that centers on chilled breaks and melancholic melodic motifs. The soft tones and slowly evolving textures in the midrange of this tune are underpinned by a churning Reese bass, which reinforces the song's overall moody vibes. The breath-filled vocal lines, including the titular hook, emote a palpable sense of human frailty. The breakdown introduces stirring strings that give the dominant melody a reprieve, before ultimately returning back to the more ebullient main instrumental theme in the arrangement's final movement.
